The Hario V60 Drip Scale – Metal, Black (Model VSTM-2000HSV)
As I mention on my About page, perfect coffee is about the control of the variables which go into brewing coffee; and specifically the control of the coffee/water ratio, therefore one of the essential items for any coffee brewer is a set of scales.
I use the Hario V60 Drip scale, and specifically the black/stainless steel version. They measure in 0.1g divisions have an LED screen and claim an 80 hour battery life. The scales also have a timer so you can measure how long the water is in contact with the coffee.
My first set of these scales didn’t work and I believe because they wouldn’t charge, I have heard similar stories in various reviews. My second set worked fine and continue to do so. I find the weighing seams to be a little slow, not sure if this is a trait of digital scales or specific to the Hario; so just go steady as you add your coffee. The ‘bright LED’ seems to go into a non bright mode after some use, you can still just see the readout and it’s actually a gentle reminder that it needs charging which is via a USB cable.
Overall, they are a nice looking set of scales that do the job of accurately weighing with the advantage of the timer function and of course bear the Hario name; so if that’s what you are after I can’t really fault them.
